My first few tries grafting My Kind of Cowl were a hot mess.
Here are a few tips that made it a lot easier for me:
- Make sure that a knit row is on the top and a purl row is on the bottom before you begin grafting.
- Do an "unofficial" graft first with a thin, contrasting-color cotton yarn. Then, all you have to do is follow your stitches with the "official" yarn to complete the graft.
Do you have other tricks up your sleeve to make this easier?

What a brilliant idea to do an 'unofficial' graft first in a different colour.
Like you, my first attempts at grafting were a mess. I shall certainly try this next time.
